ONE FOR THE ROAD

Blues Unlimited

Flyright

Paula

1978 - 1979

Bon accordéoniste et pianiste, Buckwheat propose ici un excellent disque entre Blues et Zydeco : "Zydeco honky tonk", "Rock me baby", "Please little girl", "Zydeco rock", "One for the road", "Zydeco boogie woogie".

His father Stanley Jasper Dural was a mechanic and accordionist and had 12 children. During his formative years, Stanley Dural a.k.a Buckwheat first worked with Lynn August then was the pianist of Joe Tex and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. In 1971, he formed Buckwheat & The Hitchhikers, a group in a Soul-Funk style. Buckwheat finally started playing Zydeco in 1976, integrating Clifton Chenier's band as a pianist / organist (a position he held for about two and a half years and during which he learned the accordion from Chenier). Then, Buckwheat launches a new band Ils Sont Partis Band in 1978 and signs at Blues Unlimited, the label of Mark Miller. For his first album, he recorded at the Master-Trak studio with musicians Russell Gordon, Ted Zerby, Jimmy Papillion, John Bell and Elijah "Put" Cudges. Good accordionist and pianist, Buckwheat offers here an excellent record between Blues and Zydeco : "Zydeco honky tonk", "Rock me baby", "Please little girl", "Zydeco rock", "One for the road", "Zydeco boogie woogie". This first album is the only one of the 4 Blues Unlimited discs to have been recorded on CD.

TAKE IT EASY BABY

Blues Unlimited

1980

Quelques excellents titres cependant : "Rockin' with the blues", "Josephine is not my lady", "It's alright tonight".

Some excellent titles however : "Rockin' with the blues", "Josephine is not my lady", "It's alright tonight". Behind him are John Bell, Russell Gordon, Lee Allen Zeno, Nathaniel Jolivette and Ernest Johnson. This LP has never been issued on CD.

PEOPLE'S CHOICE

Blues Unlimited

1982

"Buckwheat zydeco blues", "I done got over", "Gonna go rockin' tonight", "Ma tit feye", "Buckwheat special" figurent parmi les meilleurs moments du disque.

"Buckwheat zydeco Blues", "I done got over", "Gonna go rockin' tonight", "Ma tit feye", "Buckwheat special" are some of the highlights of the album. This LP has never been edited on CD.

ILS SONT PARTIS

Blues Unlimited

1983

I'm on the wonder", "1-4 zydeco".

Last of the 4 LPs realized for the Blues Unlimited label. This time again, his inspiration makes the difference and successes abound : "Ain't no use baby", "Buckwheat's special", "Tanya", "I'm on the wonder", "1-4 zydeco".

TURNING POINT

Rounder

April 1983

I'm just so tired".

Wild and exuberant session with a rare intensity and a very homogeneous band. Behind Buckwheat brilliant on accordion, there are Selwyn Cooper (guitar), Calvin Landry (trumpet), Lee Allen Zeno (bass), Elijah Cudges (rubboard), Nathaniel Jolivette (drums). Some powerful tracks with fast tempo like "Turning point", "Buck's boogie", "Zydeco La Louisiane" and the bustling covers of "Zydeco boogaloo" and "Tutti frutti". Other more relaxed and melodic tracks are also worth listening to as beautiful "Mon papa" and "I'm just so tired". Produced by Scott Billington for Rounder, this is probably Buckwheat Zydeco's best album. In any case, it allowed him to win a real success and spread his notoriety.

100% FORTIFIED ZYDECO

Black Top

July 1983

Le programme se révèle très varié avec du Blues ("I've had troubles with the blues", "Is there something inside you"), du Zydeco ("Somebody stole my slide", "Zydeco tous pas tous"), de la Soul ("Take me to the mountain top") ou un instrumental funky ("Jasperoux").

The program is very varied with Blues ("I've had trouble with the blues", "Is there something inside you"), Zydeco ("Somebody stole my slide", "Zydeco tous pas tous"), Soul ("Take me to the mountain top") or a funky instrumental ("Jasperoux"). An extremely consistent record that should be ranked among its best.

WAITIN' FOR MY YA YA

Rounder

April 1985

On peut citer aussi "Ya ya", "Your man is home tonight", "Think it over one more time" ainsi qu'une jolie reprise de "Walkin' to New Orleans" de Fats Domino.

Second album for Rounder again with producer Scott Billington. In this remarkable disc, we find Soul-Blues influences ("Someone else is steppin' in") and first-rate Zydeco ("Lache pas la patate", "Buck's step up"). There is also "Ya ya", "Your man is home tonight", "Think it over one more time" and a nice cover of Fats Domino's "Walkin' to New Orleans". In the CD version, there is an additional title (a quick version of "Hot tamale") also included in the "Buckwheat's zydeco party" compilation.

ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS

Island

1987

In 1986, thanks to journalist Ted Fox (also his producer and manager), he signed with the Island label becoming the first Zydeco artist to sign with a major label. For this first album at Island, Buckwheat is supported by his usual rhythm section (Lee Allen Zeno, Nathaniel Jolivette, Elijah Cudges), the guitarist Paul Senegal and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Having lost none of his inspiration or his authenticity, he delivers an exciting disc from which emerge some remarkable tracks : "Ma tite fille", "Buckwheat's special", "Hot tamale baby" and two original covers "On a night like this" (by Bob Dylan) and "Time is tight" (from Booker T. & The MG's).

TAKING IT HOME

Island

1988

On note une apparition d'Eric Clapton sur la reprise "Why does love got to be so sad" (de Derek & The Dominoes).

While the first installment for Island was in the perfect continuity of his Blues Unlimited and Rounder years, this second album for the label suffers from a too smooth production (the producers are Ted Fox and Rob Fraboni) : commercial and predictable titles, not very catchy Pop-Rock arrangements. There is an appearance of Eric Clapton on the cover "Why does love got to be so sad" (by Derek & The Dominoes).

WHERE THERE'S SMOKE THERE'S FIRE

Island

1990

Where there's smoke there's fire". I will", "It's getting late").

Under the supervision of David Hidalgo (from Los Lobos group) as a producer, here is a vigorous album with good moments like the exciting "We're having a party" and "Where there's smoke there's fire". We can also remember a nice unexpected cover of The Rolling Stones' "Beast of burden" but also the two titles for which Buckwheat Zydeco sits behind the keyboards ("Maybe I will", "It's getting late").

ON TRACK

Charisma

1991

Buckwheat stopped working with Island in 1990 and moved to Charisma label. For the first time, he invests himself in the production of the album. Blue Plate

1991

Dans ce recueil live, Buckwheat joue une version sympathique de "What you gonna do when the zydeco turn on you".

In this live collection, Buckwheat plays a nice version of "What you gonna do when the zydeco turn on you".

FIVE CARD STUD

Island

1994

For this latest album at Island, the production and arrangements of Steve Berlin are relatively smooth and not surprising. There are two duets with Willie Nelson ("Man with the blues") and Mavis Staples ("This train") and some funky elements on "Five card stud" and "Bayou girl".

TROUBLE

Mesa

1997

Still popular, Buckwheat Zydeco played at the closing ceremonies of the Atlanta Olympics in august 1996. With this album, he wants to return to the roots of Zydeco and Blues for the Los Angeles Mesa / Blue Moon label. Unfortunately, disagreements with the label and the bad distribution of the record will disappoint Buckwheat a lot. This situation led him to create his own label, Tomorrow Recordings. Despite these problems, this record deserves listening including dynamic zydecos where he shines accordion like "Put in the pocket", "Hard chargin'", "Allons à Boucherie", "Hard to stop" and blues tracks such as "Trouble" and "Wait a minute baby".

DOWNHOME LIVE

Tomorrow

November 2000

Tempo effréné, atmosphère bouillante sur des versions allongées de "What you gonna do", "Hard to stop", "Put in the pocket", "Out on the storm".

Concert recorded at El Sid O's in Lafayette during the Thanksgiving night. After a sensational introduction on "Soul Serenade", the rhythm of the titles never falters. Unbridled tempo, boiling atmosphere on extended versions of "What you gonna do", "Hard to stop", "Put in the pocket", "Out on the storm". Buckwheat is very fit just like his band (including a sparkling brass section).

JACKPOT

Tomorrow

2005

When he recorded "Jackpot" in 2005, it's been almost eight years since Buckwheat did not record an entire album in the studio. A well made album but without much novelty. Some good moments emerge from this interesting opus like "I'm gonna love you anyway" and "Jackpot". At the end of the program, we can listen to three original songs where Buckwheat plays exclusively organ in a Soul-Jazz ("Buck's going uptown") or Reggae ("Buck's going to Trenchtown") style. This CD was self-produced by Buckwheat Zydeco on his own label.

LAY YOUR BURDEN DOWN

Alligator

2009

For this album at Alligator, Buckwheat finds again producer Steve Berlin with whom he had already worked 15 years earlier. A rather opportunistic record that mixes several styles but where Zydeco is finally not very present : Reggae ("Let your yeah be yeah"), atmospheric Rock ("Lay your burden down"), a cover of Memphis Minnie ("When the levee breaks"). An overproduced album that lacks spontaneity.
