OLD MAN'S SWEETHEART

Maison de Soul

1997

Passionately fond of music, Donna learns from high school to play several instruments. Chorist and keyboardist for singer Bobby Price, she then plays in Cosmic Sky group. She forms her own group - Chapter IV - in which she sings and plays bass. In the mid 80's, Donna suffered a serious car accident that kept her away from music for many years. In 1994, she went back to her band and caught the attention of producer Mike Lachney. Following Lachney's advice, Donna turns to Zydeco and learns the accordion (she will only play it from "Down the Bayou"). But, above all, Mike Lachney allows him to sign at Maison de Soul (the Floyd Soileau label). Donna then revealed herself a superb singer with a Soul tone. Well supported by her own band Zydeco Possé (with Calvin Jones on the accordion), she signs beautiful personal compositions (often written in collaboration with Mike Lachney and Michelle Citizen). The title song "Old man's sweetheart" - a tribute to "Boozoo" Chavis - gets a regional success that makes her known. But, we can also remember on this excellent record "Heartbreaker", "Chicken", "Zydeco ride", "Come over baby" and "You used to call me" (a Clifton Chenier cover).

DOWN THE BAYOU

Maison de Soul

1999

From this album, Donna plays accordion (and keeps vocals and bass). As before, her friend Michelle Citizen participates in the writing and plays washboard. Even if this opus is substantially inferior to the previous one, we like "I'm so lonely for you", "My best friend's man" and a cover of "Tramp" by Lowell Fulson and Jimmy Mac Cracklin.

IT'S ALRIGHT

J&S

"Walk with me", "It's my turn", "Horse" sont des pistes plutôt sympathiques mais le programme demeure fort inégal.

Although she is still a competent singer and songwriter, Donna delivers here a rather disappointing album dotted with ugly electronic effects (Vocoder type) on some titles. "Walk with me", "It's my turn", "Horse" are pretty nice tracks but the program remains very uneven.

WORKIN' IT

MTE

2006

Donna reprend joliment son "Old man's sweetheart" (en hommage à "Boozoo" Chavis). Le programme se révèle intense avec des morceaux très aboutis comme "House day" et "Groove me" et leur style Soul mais aussi "Catin", "Rockin' it steady", "Creole woman", "Workin' it". Enfin, on peut aussi signaler une remarquable reprise du "I got a pepper in my shoe" de "Boozoo" Chavis.

Finally, we can also report a remarkable cover of "I got a pepper in my shoe" of "Boozoo" Chavis.

I'M JUST A COUNTRY GIRL

2019

Eleven years after her last album, Donna offers this new album. Fortunately, she has lost absolutely nothing of her talent and continues to play this excellent country Zydeco-Blues (as the title suggests) tinged with Funk moments. A very pleasant but uneven album from which we can highlight the superb "Zydeco ride", "Chicken in my yard", "Clean up woman", "Daddy daddy" and the final gospel.
