Né dans le Ninth Ward de la Nouvelle Orléans, Jessie grandit dans une famille marquée par la musique. D'abord batteur, il forme son propre groupe au début des années 50. Jessie joue aussi aux côtés de Professor Longhair et de Huey "Piano" Smith. Remarqué avec son groupe par les producteurs Joe Banashak et Larry Mac Kinley (qui dirigent le label Minit), il trouve l'opportunité de graver ses premiers morceaux en studio en janvier 1960. Ce sera l'excellent "Ooh poo pah doo" avec les arrangements d'Allen Toussaint. Ce succès public sera suivi de nombreux titres importants dans ce style de Rhythm & Blues louisianais très dansant : "Whip it on me", "Get it touch", "Oogsey Moo" (dans un style proche de Professor Longhair), "Scoop scoobie doobie", "Sweet jelly roll". Jessie quitte Minit en 1963. Une première oeuvre qui mériterait d'être redécouverte.
Born in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, Jessie grew up in a family marked by music. First a drummer, he formed his own band in the early 1950's. Jessie also plays alongside Professor Longhair and Huey "Piano" Smith. Noticed with his band by producers Joe Banashak and Larry Mac Kinley (who run the Minit label), he finds the opportunity to record his first pieces in studio in january 1960. It will be the excellent "Ooh poo pah doo" with arrangements by Allen Toussaint. This public success will be followed by many important titles in this dancing Louisiana Rhythm & Blues style : "Whip it on me", "Get it touch", "Oogsey Moo" (in a style close to Professor Longhair), "Scoop scoobie doobie", "Sweet jelly roll". Jessie left Minit in 1963. A first work which deserves to be rediscovered.
