THE CHRONOLOGICAL JOHNNY "GUITAR" WATSON

Classics

1952 - December 1954

Il y délivre notamment les superbes "Hot little mama", "I love to love you", "Too tired" et le succès public "Those lonely lonely nights" (une ballade composée par Earl King).

Coming from a musicians family from the Houston's Third Ward, Johnny first learned the guitar and then piano but quickly became a real multi-instrumentalist. As a guitarist, he is part of the Texano-Californian tradition influenced by T-Bone Walker or Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. When his parents separated in 1950, he followed his father to Los Angeles. Very gifted, Johnny plays in the bands of Chuck Higgins or Amos Milburn. For Higgins, he also sings (and plays piano) on the tracks "Motor head baby" or "Stormy" issued by the Combo label run by Jake Porter. Thanks to D.J. Hunter Hancock who introduces him to producer Ralph Bass, he cut his first titles as a leader for Federal from january 1953 : a new version of "Motor head baby", "No I can't", "Highway 60", "What's goin' on", "Walkin' to my baby" and of course his famous instrumental "Space guitar" which demonstrates his immense talents as a guitarist. Then at the end of 1954, Johnny arrived at RPM where he was accompanied by excellent sidemen (Maxwell Davis, Jim Wynn). He delivers in particular the superb "Hot little mama", "I love to love you", "Too tired" and the public success "Those lonely lonely nights" (a ballad composed by Earl King).

For Modern - RPM, Johnny "Guitar" Watson records the best part of his first work under the supervision of producer Joe Bihari. Accompanied by superb musicians (the Maxwell Davis orchestra), he delivers remarkable titles where his incisive guitar shines : "Hot little mama", "I love to love you", "Too tired" and the public success "Those lonely lonely nights" (a ballad composed by Earl King), "Someone cares for me", "Three hours past midnight". His way of plucking the strings of his guitar, his colorful costumes, his exuberant stage performance ensured him rapid success and the nickname Johnny "Guitar" Watson. Some of these selections also resume obscure sessions of 1956 with some interesting titles as a "Love bandit" (first version of "Gangster of love") alone on piano. We also find the first tracks for the Keen label and the 1961 session for the Eldo label (managed by Johnny Otis). The Ace and P-Vine selections focused on RPM recordings are the best and capture Johnny "Guitar" Watson at his best. The other two selections with an extended tracklist add more sessions a little less dense.

THE ORIGINAL GANGSTER OF LOVE : THE KEEN RECORDS SESSIONS

VSOP

November 1957 - February 1958

Johnny composes his best version of "Gangster of love" (this title obtained a good success and became over the years a sort of nickname) but also the excellent cover of "One room country shack". This CD presents the entirety of the two Keen sessions with all the alternative takes of these four tracks. Therefore, it is better to advise it for confirmed fans.

But above all, it brings together the tracks recorded for Syd Nathan's King label between 1961 and 1963. During this period, we feel that Johnny continues to expand his musical horizon trying out different styles (Soul, Rock & Roll, Pop, Romantic Ballads) with varying degrees of success. We can point out from this disparate production "Broke and lonely", "Sweet lovin' mama", "Cuttin' in" and new versions of "Gangster of love" and "Those lonely lonely nights".

Always eager to broaden his musical horizons, Johnny "Guitar" Watson finances with his own money this session where he puts himself this time in the shoes of a crooner. Johnny sits down behind the piano and receives support from John Duke (bass) and Carl Lott (drums). Lovers of his guitar playing will probably be disappointed by these romantic and jazzy tunes and with almost uniformly slow tempos. The tapes were sold to Chess which issued the album.

Fantasy

May 1973

If I had the power", "Lovin' you", "I get the feeling", "Why don't you treat me like I'm your man".

After an absence of a few years, Johnny comes back with this record for Fantasy with a new sound more oriented towards a very melodic Soul. Although he left the Blues forever, his stinging guitar is still very present and still has some Blues elements from time to time. A very consistent album with nice moments like "If I had the power", "Lovin' you", "I get the feeling", "Why don't you treat me like I'm your man".

I DON'T WANT TO BE ALONE STRANGER

Globalement, celui-ci est sensiblement inférieur au précédent mais recèle tout de même des moments intéressants : "I don't want to be a lone ranger", "Tripping", "You make my heart want to sing", "Love is sweet misery", "You can stay but the noise must go".

Second and last installment for the californian label Fantasy, this record takes up the same melodic Soul perfectly produced by Johnny "Guitar" Watson with almost the same team. Overall, this one is significantly lower than the previous one but still conceals some interesting moments : "I don't want to be a lone ranger", "Tripping", "You make my heart want to sing", "Love is sweet misery", "You can stay but the noise must go".

Le Funk est à l'honneur avec les irrésistibles "I need it", "Ain't that a bitch", "Superman lover", "Won't you forgive me baby" sans oublier "I want to ta-ta you baby" et ses accents Blues.
