THE NEW BLUEBLOODS

Alligator

1986

Son of drummer Cleo "Baldhead Pete" Williams (aka Pete Coleman), he forms a group, still a child, with his brother Donald in which Michael plays guitar and bass. Soon after, he joined the Midnight Sons, a band playing in Chicago's West and North Side clubs. Subsequently, he worked behind Johnny Dollar, Aron Burton, Willie Kent, Johnny Christian. But Michael really going to the next level by becoming the guitarist of James Cotton in 1979, a position he held for about a decade participating in some notable albums ("High compression", "Live from Chicago"). In this anthology - produced by Bruce Iglauer - presenting the new generation of young bluesmen, he interprets "Woman loves a woman".

BACK BREAKING BLUES

Wolf

October 1990

Plusieurs faces méritent d'être signalées : "Breakfast in bed", "House ain't no home", "Let me tell you 'bout", "Call my job", "Woman loves woman".

Excellent guitarist with fluid playing but limited singer, Michael offers here his first complete album. Although production is minimal, we appreciate this exciting blues-funk sound. Several sides are noteworthy : "Breakfast in bed", "House ain't no home", "Let me tell you 'bout", "Call my job", "Woman loves woman". Note an excellent performance of Professor Eddie Lusk on piano.

CHICAGO BLUES FESTIVAL '91

Black & Blue

December 1991

Shared album with Professor Eddie Lusk during a french tour (Chicago Blues Festival) with support from brothers Kenny & Darnell Neal. The group is perfectly compact and sounds impeccably. Professor Eddie Lusk is a better singer than Michael Coleman ("I'm a blues piano man" and "Lottery blues" are also excellent tracks). But Coleman stands out as a great, subtle and powerful guitarist throughout the disc.

SHAKE YOUR BOOTY

Wolf

March 1994

Apart from a useless touted sleeve cover, Michael offers with "Shake your booty" an album in the continuation of previous opus, mixing blues and funk, convincing enough without being exceptional.

SELF RISING BLUES

Blues & Rock Connection

October 1994

On some tracks, we regret a rather poor production and mixing. Besides this technical aspect, Michael Coleman delivers an unoriginal album resuming the recipe from previous albums but without inspiration. A pale accomplishment.

YOU CAN'T TAKE WHAT I GOT

Blues & Rock Connection

November 1996 - January 1997

On this new project for Blues & Rock Connection, Michael is accompanied by highly skilled american and italian musicians (production by Stefano Marise). Cut in Italy, this is an interesting album that can be heard with pleasure.

CLARK STREET RAMBLERS

Blue Chicago

June - July 1997

You're going to miss me".

DO YOUR THING

Delmark

July 2000

Excellently produced by Robert Koester and Steve Wagner, Michael delivers a set of exciting and funky Chicago Blues. His guitar solos are still too fluid and well constructed. His voice still his weak point although, anyway, often well placed. The musicians offer high quality support. One regret : many covers from different backgrounds (Latimore, Isaac Hayes, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding) not always convincing. We would like to hear this wonderful guitarist on more personal compositions. We also note that this is his first american full album : previous opus were either austrian or italian.

BLUES BRUNCH AT THE MART

Delmark

June 2005

In fact, it is not really an album of Michael Coleman. Of course, he takes two titles as a leader ("Sky is crying", "You're going to miss me") but on the remaining tracks, he merely discreetly accompany others Delmark artists. Overall, this CD proves to be quite acceptable and allows us to draw a sort of panorama of the best artists of the famous label. Affected by diabetes and obesity problem, he experiences serious health problems that hinder the end of his career. He died at the end of 2014 aged only 58 years old.
