February - December 1928

Son of Isom Hurt and Mary Jean Mac Cain, John has been playing the guitar as an autodidact since childhood. In 1928, he was noticed by producer Tommy Rockwell, who worked for the Okeh label (John had been recommended by two musicians from the region, Shell Smith and Willie Narmour). This resulted in three sessions, one in Memphis in february 1928, the other two in New York in december of the same year. During these sessions, he records a handful of masterpieces that show his clear and virtuoso fingerpicking guitar playing, his soft and caressing voice, his true sense of melody : "Frankie", "Nobody's dirty business", "Louis Collins", "Avalon blues", "Candy man blues", "Got the blues (can't be satisfied)". John is a songster who not only sings blues but also many traditional and folk tunes. These titles obtained little success in their time and John returned to live and work in his native Mississippi playing his guitar for himself or his friends.

DISCOVERY : THE REBIRTH OF "MISSISSIPPI" JOHN HURT

Spring Fed

March 1963

Il joue ses morceaux (parfois avec sa femme Jessie) avec feeling et application : "Nobody's business", "Casey Jones", "Coffee blues", "Waiting for you", "Let the mermaids flirt with me", "Pallet on the floor".

Although he had practically given up the guitar, John Hurt had no idea that his 1928 songs were still listened to by white student audiences. He is found by Tom Hoskins in his town and recorded for him a series of pieces taken on the spot (we hear a rooster several times) in march 1963. His talent on guitar remained intact and his singing also. He plays his songs (sometimes with his wife Jessie) with feeling and application : "Nobody's business", "Casey Jones", "Coffee blues", "Waiting for you", "Let the mermaids flirt with me", "Pallet on the floor". In addition to these superb tracks - blues, folk or religious tunes - there is also a very informative 15-minute interview. A remarkable document.

Impeccablement produit, John joue de petites pépites entre Blues et Folk : "Pay day", "I'm satisfied", "Coffee blues", "Louis Collins", "If you don't want me baby".

This is John Hurt's debut album for the Vanguard label and is generally considered his best record since his rediscovery. Impeccably produced, John plays small gems between Blues and Folk : "Pay day", "I'm satisfied", "Coffee blues", "Louis Collins", "If you don't want me baby". Here, his delicate and fluid fingerpicking guitar playing, his soft and melodious voice shine particularly. An acoustic blues classic essential to any collection.
