SUNNYLAND SLIM AND HIS PALS

JSP

June 1947 - 1955

Accompagné du superbe guitariste Lonnie Johnson, Slim grave notamment "Brownskin woman", "My heavy load". Puis, il travaille aussi pour Opera 5 ("Train time"), Apollo ("Hard time"), Mercury ("Hit the road again"), Sunny ("Back to Korea blues" avec l'harmonica de Snooky Pryor), Regal ("Orphan boy blues"), Club 51 ("Sad and lonesome"). Pour le label J.O.B., Slim propose "Down home child", l'instrumental "Sunnyland special", accompagné par le guitariste Robert Lockwood Jr. Slim enregistre aussi pour le label Chance une poignée de titres ("When I was young", l'instrumental "Bassology") qui paraissent finalement sur la marque Constellation. On trouve aussi une séance pour Vee-Jay (qui était restée inédite jusqu'à la parution du CD Classics) avec Snooky Pryor, Floyd Jones et Eddie Taylor : "Troubles of my own", "I done you wrong".

Originally from Mississippi, he settled in Memphis in 1925 then finally joined Chicago in 1942. In this city where electric Blues was born, Sunnyland became a renowned pianist, first under the influence of Doctor Clayton, in the great tradition of barrelhouses. His first session as a leader took place in june 1947 for Hy-Tone. Accompanied by superb guitarist Lonnie Johnson, Slim notably records "Brownskin woman", "My heavy load". Then, he recorded for the Chess brothers, for their Aristocrat label, with the guitar of Muddy Waters : "Johnson machine gun", "Fly right little girl", "She ain't nowhere". For RCA-Victor, under the name of Doctor Clayton's Buddy, he sings in the purest style of his model accompanied by Blind John Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, Ransom Knowling and Judge Riley ("Farewell little girl", "Broke and hungry", "Nappy head woman"). For the J.O.B. label, Slim offers "Down home child", the instrumental "Sunnyland special", accompanied by the guitarist Robert Lockwood Jr. Slim also recorded for the Chance label a handful of titles ("When I was young", the instrumental "Bassology") which finally appeared on the Constellation label. We also finds a session for Vee-Jay (which had remained unreleased until the release of the Classics CD) with Snooky Pryor, Floyd Jones and Eddie Taylor : "Troubles of my own", "I done you wrong".

Une séance très consistante de pur Chicago Blues avec d'excellents moments : "Smile on my face", "I had it hard", "Soft and mellow Stella", "Lonely girl". For this session in Chicago, Slim is accompanied by Carey Bell, Hubert Sumlin, Jeff Swan, Bob Stroger and Odie Payne Jr. This is an honorable album with good moments but missing of inspiration. Initially issued by the german label L+R, the album is taken up on CD by Evidence which adds the titles of Sunnyland Slim recorded during American Folk Blues Festival 1980 and 1981 tours.

Evidence

April 1985

Il s'agit donc d'un solide programme de Chicago Blues avec des titres intéressants : "You used to love me", "Give you all my money", "I feel so bad", "Never picked no cotton".
