Son of Sam "Ernie" Alexander and Jennie Brooks, he was raised by his grandmother Sally Beavers. Main Texas blues pioneer with Blind Lemon Jefferson, Algernon "Texas" Alexander is a singer performing in the streets, taverns, local parties, railroad yards in eastern Texas. His singing directly inherited from work-songs and field hollers is deep, expressive and terribly penetrating. Discovered by Sammy Price, he records from august 1927 a first-rate work for Okeh. Being just a singer, he will receive the expert accompaniment of the extraordinary guitarist Lonnie Johnson. Johnson will bring a lot to the music of "Texas" Alexander on tracks like "Long lonesome day blues", "Levee camp moan blues", "Death bed blues", "Sittin' on a log", "Work ox blues" (with Eddie Lang). Indeed, his best titles were produced with Lonnie Johnson. "Texas" Alexander cut lots of sides until 1929 with different other musicians : "King" Oliver, "Little Hat" Jones, Carl Davis, Eddie Heywood, Clarence Williams. But despite their undoubted qualities, these collaborations will never reach the level of his faces with Lonnie Johnson. In april 1934, he records several songs with the famous Mississippi Sheiks for Okeh then work for Vocalion for a few sessions (still in 1934). Towards 1939-1940, "Texas" Alexander is accused of killing his wife and allegedly sentenced to 5 years in prison. According to recent research by Coy Prather (for Texas Music Magazine), he would, in fact, not imprisoned but would have served his sentence in a working farm. After an absence of over 15 years, he cut his last recordings in 1950 in Houston for the Freedom label with Leon Benton and Buster Pickens. He died in 1954 of syphilis. The entirety of his work was compiled by Johnny Parth and published on 4 LPs for Matchbox. The set was reissued in 3 CDs at Document with a very decent sound quality.
