Compagnon de route de Guitar Slim à la fin des années 40, Willie va développer comme son mentor un jeu de guitare subtil et précis. En 1949, il s'installe à Chicago et joue derrière Otis Rush, Morris Pejoe ou Freddie King. Il fait un bref retour dans son Arkansas natal mais finalement s'installe à Detroit au début des années 70. Il cotoie alors Bobo Jenkins et "Baby Boy" Warren. C'est à ce moment là qu'il trouve l'opportunité de graver ses deux premiers morceaux (sous le pseudonyme de Steel Wheels) sur cette anthologie consacrée aux bluesmen de Detroit : le slow blues "Door lock blues" et "Detroit jump".
A close friend of Guitar Slim in the late 1940's, Willie developed a subtle and precise guitar style, much like his mentor. In 1949, he moved to Chicago and played behind Otis Rush, Morris Pejoe and Freddie King. He briefly returned to his native Arkansas but finally settled in Detroit in the early 1970's. There, he rubbed shoulders with Bobo Jenkins and "Baby Boy" Warren. It was at this time that he found the opportunity to record his first two tracks (under the pseudonym Steel Wheels) for this anthology dedicated to Detroit bluesmen : the slow blues "Door lock blues" and "Detroit jump".

Ce CD assez rare relate un sympathique concert donné dans un club de la banlieue de Detroit par Willie D. Warren et son groupe régulier. Willie se montre en forme au chant et à la guitare et fait la part belle aux reprises de standard. Une set-list peu originale donc, mais bien rendue par les musiciens.
This rather rare CD compiles an enjoyable concert given in a Detroit suburban club by Willie D. Warren and his regular band. Willie is in fine form on vocals and guitar, and gives pride of place to standard covers. A rather unoriginal setlist, then, but well executed by the musicians.

Willie D. Warren s'est imposé comme un bluesman important de la scène de Detroit depuis les années 70. Pourtant, il a bien peu enregistré à l'exception d'un album live intéressant et une poignée de titres épars dans des anthologies durant les années 90. Ces deux disques posthumes reprennent des séances que Willie avait enregistré pour le label anglais Bluetrack quelques mois avant sa mort mais qui ne furent jamais éditées. Grâce au label Blues Archives, on peut désormais écouter ses morceaux qui constituent donc l'équivalent de son premier album studio. Accompagné de bons sidemen (dont Howard Glazer), il délivre de bons morceaux souvent des reprises mais jouées avec goût. Willie est décédé dans les derniers jours de l'année 2000.
Willie D. Warren established himself as a major bluesman on the Detroit scene since the 1970's. Yet, he recorded very little with the exception of an interesting live album and a handful of scattered tracks in anthologies during the 1990's. These two posthumous albums feature sessions Willie recorded for the british label Bluetrack, a few months before his death, but which were never released. Thanks to the Blues Archives label, we can now listen to these tracks, which constitute the equivalent of his first studio album. Accompanied by nice sidemen (including Howard Glazer), he delivers fine songs, often covers, but played with taste. Willie passed away in the last days of 2000.
